Melbourne City FC has officially announced the transfer of defender Kai Trewin to New York City FC. The 24-year-old Australian international will join NYCFC through the 2028–29 season, with an option for 2029–30. Trewin's move comes after a successful stint at Melbourne City FC, where he made 47 appearances, scored three goals, and provided one assist across all competitions. His contributions were vital in the club's triumph in the 2024–25 Grand Final and in the AFC Champions League, where he made six appearances. Trewin's impressive performances earned him the Scott Jamieson Medal for Player of the Year and the Players’ Player Award in his debut season.
Sporting Director Todd Dunivant praised Trewin's versatility, stating that he solidifies the team's defense and can also play in midfield. Trewin's transfer is seen as a strong endorsement of the City Football Group's network, highlighting the successful development of players within their clubs. Before joining Melbourne City FC, Trewin played for Brisbane Roar, logging over 8,600 minutes in 103 appearances. He is also recognized for his contributions to the Australian National Team at the U20 and U23 levels, and he made his senior international debut in November 2025.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Trewin stated, "I’m grateful for my time at Melbourne City FC and for the opportunity to come to a Club with high standards and clear ambitions." With this transfer, Melbourne City FC continues to showcase its role in developing talent for international clubs, while Trewin looks forward to competing at a higher level in Major League Soccer.
